"New Check" checkbox on Enter Contribution screen
I just updated to the PC verision 9 release date 12/13/07. There is a new checkbox labeled "new check". I don't know what the purpose of this checkbox is. It doesn't seem to do anything. Could someone please explain?

I am assuming you are talking about the contributions module where you enter individual contributions. If you record the check numbers of contributors and you have more than one check from a single contributor by checking this box the check number field is cleared so you can enter the new check number. This option needs to be selected under > File > Preferences > Contribution Setup. When the window is displayed you will find a Record Contribution Check Numbers selection. If you click the yes button, when you next open the contributions module you will find a field to enter check numbers. It will be grayed out if you have CASH selected in the upper right hand corner but will be available if you have CHECK selected.

FWIW ... even if you don't record check numbers, the New Check box should also be checked if you're entering two checks from the same contributor consecutively. Otherwise the Bank Deposit Slip report in Contributions will lump both checks together in one amount.
We used this report to do two things:
1. Verify correct entry by the data entry person
2. Included it in the deposit with the deposit slip instead of having to add a adding machine tape.
It has come in very handy both at the church, and occasionally at the bank when a deposit had a problem.
You DON'T need to use the New Check box if you are entering another check from a contributor, and you have entered other contributors between checks. One of the tricks one group of counters used to do was separate checks so they would enter one check, then a different contributor's check, then back to the first contributor. Made it easier for the data entry person as they didn't have to take their fingers off the keyboard.
This worked well at my last church as we had a system where one person would read the check, and the other entered it. Then they used the Bank Deposit Slip report to verify entry.
