I noticed that someone on the forum purchased their check reader on e-bay. And I see several for sale on e-bay. Is there a particular model that I should be looking for?

I found one on eBay, and I looked for one that was made by the same company that Powerchurch offers, MAGTEK. One of the reasons I did was that Magtek offers free download of drivers and such.

Now, looking at what I've just seen on eBay, you'll want to make sure that the reader comes with the interface cable and power supply.

There's one shown that does come with an PS2 keyboard interface cable that will work fine.

There's another that says its a USB interface, but does not say anything about interface cables, power supply or software being included.

As is the case on eBay, Caveat Emptor
