HELP!!! Posted to Closed Months

While I was away, a church member came in and asked about her contribution statement. It was missing some contribs. After a little searching my secretary found two checks in a pile that came in the mail but had not been deposited or recorded. So in an effort to correct the statement she entered the checks posting to closed months. We have been away and are trying to balance the checkbook. The checks were to two different funds.
The contributions appear on the "Reconcile Bank Account" window, but do not seem to affect the balance of the account, so long as they remain unchecked. I need to correct this but I am not sure how to proceed. I am out of balance, but I don't think it is this problem which is causing it, but I am not sure. I have some very odd numbers showing up. Any suggestions would be welcome.
