Refund contribution

In January our depositor was short an amount of money. She felt responsible and deposited that money. Once this was discussed several committees felt that this is free will work and that she didn't have to deposit the money. In March I wrote her a check to refund the contribution. I debited the Regular offering and credited cash. Is there something else I need to do? I want the Contribution Fund report to match my Income Statement. I tried to post only to the Contribution report a reversal entry, but it seemed like some numbers were off and not matching up.

If you enter a negative contribution for the person with the same date and fund of the original, then post only to the contributions module, it should do what you want.

Ok, the first time I entered a negative in March and it was messing up my March numbers. I went back and entered a positive in March and a negative in January.

I will take another look at it.

Really, the important thing about entering the reversal with the exact same information as the original contribution is so that the person's contribution statement does not show a negative contribution. If you match it to the same date and fund, we will only show the net amount for that date on their statement.

Aside from the accounting issue, if the amount the depositor put in was posted as a receiptable contribution, then you may not be legally allowed to issue a refund, unless you can show that the depositor did not know that it would be entered as a receiptable contribution. I know that Canadian tax laws do not allow for refunds, if you're in the U.S., you should check first before issuing the refund.
