Help with combining contributors

Hello! I'm new here, so I apologize if there is already an existing topic on this subject - I didn't find one in my search.
I have a few contributors who have been entered more than once, for various reasons and I need to combine them. For instance, one of them has a misspelled name on envelope #304, but the name is correct (and it is the same contributor) on envelope #357. I tried re-assigning env#'s, but of course, it tells me that the number I'm trying to re-assign to is in use by another family.
I'm certain there is a simple solution that I am overlooking, and I would be obliged if someone would point it out to me. Any help is appreciated greatly!

Have you investigated (using the Help function) "Moving individuals between households"?
Hope this helps.

I've had this problem. The easiest way I've found is to assign the duplicate enteries to the same family. Then you can assign envelope numbers from the contributor you are going to delete to the same envelope number of the correct contributor. Use the "Reassign an Envelope Number" under contributions. As long as the number you are reassiging to is in the same family, then PC will allow it. Then you go back in Integrated Data Entry and delete the profile of the contributor that is incorrect. You may also need to delete the family record for the incorrect contributor if it was entered as a family originally.

To clarify ...
'to assign the duplicate entries'
you
move the duplicate personal profile under the correct family mailing list record.
Here's a step-by-step process I wrote two years ago to do this:
1. Decide which mailing record you want to keep.
2. Go to the incorrect mailing record and MOVE the personal profile listed there to the mailing record you're keeping.
3. Under contributions menu, select Reassign an envelope number. Enter the envelope number of the personal profile you want to eventually delete as the first number, and the enveloper number of the correct profile as the second. Press OK, the data will then be merged, and the incorrect profile will then reflect the correct number.
4. Delete the incorrect profile.
5. Delele the incorrect mailing record.

Wow! Thanks everyone, for your help. And particularly for the step by step, NeilZ!

That did it.
I've been using PC for over a year, but with no training, until last month when I attended a (wonderful) class, so now I'm trying to really dig in and "fix" some things.
Sorry I was so long in getting back - we have just called a Minister of Students and we have been getting an office ready for him, which means I've been moving for several days.
Thank you again, so very much!
