Column Report Layout

I am trying to produce a custom report in column layout using report designer, but no matter what I try, I cannot get the detail band narrower than 3"! I tried pulling up the bar & double clicking on it to type in the new height, to no avail. Any other suggestions?

It sounds like you may have a field or other report object in the way... It may even be something so silly as a label with only a space as text. Try opening the detail band up wider, then clicking and dragging the selection tool (white arrow) around the whole area of the detail band... see if the "dots" show up on a previously hidden item.
The detail band, as with any other band of the report designer, should allow you to close it up all the way, if needed. Sounds like you have something around the 3" mark blocking it's path.
