Variables in Reports

Hello
I was working on a report form and added variables to the form. Variables that would do calculations based on fields in the query. I was able to save the form find. However ... the next time I ran the query and tried to run the report .. it gives a message saying it can not find the fields in the query. The fields do not exist in the query but are variables in the report.
Can I not use the variables in the report?
