IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR AVG ANTIVIRUS USERS

Post by Zorak »

A problem in a recent update to virus definitions in AVG Anti-virus software will return false-positive virus threats in the PowerChurch Plus versions 8 & 8.5, and Pocket PowerChurch executable files (pcplus8.exe, pcplus85.exe, pcsync.exe, and pcsdiag.exe). By default, AVG will delete these files to "heal" the infection. This will render PowerChurch Plus inoperable.

The supposed threat that it finds is "Trojan horse Generic9.BHVL".

We are in contact with AVG to try and get this problem resolved.

For the time being, we suggest not taking the default action of "heal" when a virus is reported in installations of PowerChurch Plus version 8, 8.5, or Pocket PowerChurch.

We will keep this topic updated with any news related to this issue.

An update has now been issued by AVG which fixes this issue. If your installation of AVG automatically checks for updates in the morning, go ahead and manually tell it to check for updates again. This should resolve the issue. Hopefully, no one was caused any harm because of this!

If AVG flagged your PowerChurch Plus executable file as a virus, you can perform the following steps to recover your program files:

- Right click on the AVG icon in the system tray at the bottom right of your screen.

- Choose Check For Updates

- Once the latest releases have automatically downloaded and installed, double click the AVG icon to “launch the AVG Control Center”

- Click on the large “Virus Vault” button, then click the Open button toward the bottom right.

- Select the program (pcplus8.exe, pcplus85.exe, pcsdiag.exe, pcsync.exe, etc) from the list, then go to Action > Restore File(s)

- Follow the prompts to move the file back into place.

Our Support Technicians do not have AVG Anti-virus installed and therefore, if you call for help with this, these written directions are what they will be referring to.

We have talked to a few users who, in trying to follow these instructions, found that the PCPLUS executable file was not located in the Virus Vault. This means that AVG is set to automatically delete files from the vault.

In this case, if the file is missing from the Virus Vault and can not be restored, you will simply need to reinstall the PowerChurch Plus program from the installation CD.

To change this preference in AVG:

- Double click the icon in your System Tray at the bottom right of the screen.

- Click on the large Virus Vault button, then click Open.

- Go to the Service menu and choose Program Settings.

- Uncheck the box that says "Automatic File Deletion" to never automatically delete the files.

OR

- Leave the box checked

- Change the number of days to 14 or 30 days to allow yourself to review potential problems or "false-positives" prior to the files being deleted.
