Accounting Restart Question

Post by MacedoniaUMC »

The church I am working for has been using PowerChurch for several years, although apparently never correctly. AT this point, all I am really concerned with is getting their checking account balance to be accurate within the program-it is over $4000 off of the banks balance. Should I delete all the old data and start over, zeroing out the account balances? I would really like to zero out everything before January 1, 2008. Can I do that and keep the data from January til now and still correct the beginning balance for the checking account?

Unfortunately, restarting Accounting means exactly that, everything gets reset to zero. Then you are given the opportunity to enter beginning balances at that time.

I have finally decided that the only thing I can do to fix this mess is to restart accounting from June 1. My question now is this: How do I keep my payroll data (for tax purposes) and contribution data (again for tax purposes) from Jan, 2008 through May 2008? I need to redo the contribution funds-they are all messed up also, but I can't redo them without getting rid of all the data currently posted to them. I would assume that payroll would be the same. I am fairly certain based on some other forum postings that the liability accounts for payroll are set up incorrectly as well, so that has to be corrected also. Would it be better to try to restart from Jan. 2008? That would entail re-entering every transaction from January through now, wouldn't it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you restart accounting, it does nothing to the Contributions Module database. There is no direct link between it and Funds Accounting.

While the Contribution Funds may be setup incorrectly, that is, they may not be crediting or debiting the proper Funds Accounting accounts, those Contribution Funds setup entries are only used to create the transactions that are posted to Funds Accounting.

You do not have to worry about losing the year-to-date Contributions data.

That said, you will have to know the correct starting balance for any income accounts you recreate in Funds Accounting.

I'm not sure how the Payroll module works, and how tied in to Funds Accounting it is. Hopefully someone will come by with that answer.

If you restart accounting the program will wipe out all your payroll postings.
