deleting inactive accounts

I have several inactive accounts that have been inactive for 12 months. When I try to delete them I get an error message that says I can't delete that account because there are transactions for it. My question is if I clear transactions up to a certain date so that I can delete those inactive accounts will I also loose the transaction details for all my active accounts? If that is the case then can you tell me how to delete my inactive accounts.

I'm not sure if this will help, but we change our inactive accounts to 9000 numbers just to get them out of the way. That way, if there is any earlier activity that we need to look up, we still have the accounts listed.

Is there not a way to completely delete/remove the inactive accounts? We no longer need them in our system.
