Prior year contribution / Current year Pledge

Post by dsnilsson »

We have a few members that will make a 2009 pledge and make the payment in 2008 for tax purposes. I know that their 2008 contribution statement will reflect their payment and that their pledge for 2009 will show a balance due.

The only way I can think of making this work is if I cheat and say the pledge is for 12/31/08-12/31/09 instead of 1/1/09 to 12/31/09 and I record their "next year's payment" on 12/31/08 so that their 2009 statement will be correct for tax purposes and that the pledge amounts will reflect all the payments from 12/31/08 through 12/31/09.

Will this work? Is there a better solution?

What we used to do was manually update the member's pledge record with the 'starting pledge amount'.

So if the person contributed $200 in 2008 towards their 2009 pledge of $2000, the Pledged to Actual Report will reflect the correct pledge balance of $1800 remaining for 2009.

When you print a member's contribution report and include the pledge balance outstanding, the correct balance will be reflected.

Hope this helps

Pledge Payments

Another way I've used is to go under "View Posted Pledges" and find the contribution from 08 that really was for 09 pledge. Then use reassign pledge at bottom of page and assign this contribution from 08 to the 09 pledge. When you run the contribution report, it will only show the actual contributions received for the date range selected but it will include this prior year payment in the pledge summary totals.

Only thing to remember that if you do this, this 08 contribution will be included in the reports you might run for 09 that show pledged versus unpledged amounts.

This was the main reason we did the process I outlined above.
