We have nine individuals who go by their second name.
In the directory, the 'preferred' name is correct, but the initial is that of the first name.
e.g. Margaret Joy is listed Joy J.
This must be a common occurence, but I do not see it listed.

I'm assuming you're talking about the church directory report found under the Personal Profile module.

the system will only pick up what was put in the preferred name block.

For example if the Full name is: John Jacob Astor
and the Preferred Name is Jacob.

If on the report you leave the name displayed on the default selection, which is use the name as selected (Given or Preferred) on the personal profile. And the GIVEN name is selected, the name will appear as John Astor.

You also have the capability to override the setting on the Personal Profile and force the use of the Preferred name: In which case the name will appear as Jacob Astor.

Or you can force the Given name: John Astor.

Or force the FULL Name in which case the name will appear as John (Jacob) Astor.

In every case, however, what appears in the data items on the Personal Profile will be used. So, I'd check to see what is listed on the Personal Profile and make sure that its setup correctly.
