Check reader in Windows 7

Post by igravag »

Not sure if this is right place, but I'm at wit's end with my check reader and any help would be appreciated!

The problem started after upgrading to Windows 7 AND Pcplus 11. (Simultaneously. Seemed like a good idea at the time :-)

SHORT VERSION: The check input module finds the check reader, initializes it, says "ready to scan" and then never gets any input.

LONG VERSION:
After installing PcPlus 11 on the machine, I downloaded the Magtek Windows 7 driver and successfully installed it. The check reader is a USB "serial emulation" model, so when you plug it in the driver creates a virtual COM port (COM 3) and the computer thinks there is an RS232 check reader connected. This all works great -- I can scan checks into any serial terminal program, and I can change/download/upload settings to the reader from the MICRbase software. In short, the reader is working flawlessly as far as I can tell.

When I open the check scanning module in powerchurch, it finds the reader on COM 3 and initializes it and then says "ready to scan." Yet nothing will appear in the scan field. My guess at this point is that there is some piece of code somewhere that's supposed to take the scanned serial input and copy it into the check number scan field, as if I had done that using the actual keyboard. But since the reader is NOT operating in USB keyboard emulation mode, this critical step never happens for some reason.

Does anyone know why? Thanks so much. In His service, Ian

You have a Windows 7 64-bit machine. There is an updated control that needs to be installed on the system. Contact support (via email is good) and you'll be directed where to get the update.

Sorry -- I forgot to mention that this is NOT a 64-bit version of Windows 7. I have verified that in the control panel and also because I accidentally tried to install a 64-bit printer driver (unrelated to this problem) and the PC was unhappy with me till I figured that out. It is a 32-bit Windows 7 installation.

I have tried to call tech support but since I am a church volunteer with a regular job I usually can't be around for a call-back during business hours. An email to tech support hasn't generated any response...

Really it's the administrative staff that enter the checks who are at wit's end -- I'm just trying to help!

Thank you. Ian

When passing the check through the reader, are you getting a solid green light, or does it flash red or orange for a moment?

Upon entering the screen, does the small window show it's programming the reader?

Was the check reader purchased from PowerChurch? I ask because it might be a problem specific to the model you have.

Thanks, Tracy.

The check reader flashes green. (I can fire up a serial terminal program on COM3 9600 8N1 and see the formatted ASCII string after scanning a check.) No red or orange. This at least suggests that the hardware is working.

After opening the check reading window, a small window does pop up. Powerchurch finds the check reader on COM3, and then says something about programming or initializing it. That all happens pretty fast but it is definitely visible.

I did purchase the reader from Powerchurch several years ago and it worked flawlessly till the upgrade to Windows 7/PCplus 11. It is model number SO393213 (part number 22523003 rev C).

I'd be MORE than happy to email this whole story again to a specific person at Powerchurch if there is a "go-to" expert on this subject then post the solution here for all to see once we find it.

Thanks for your help!

The behavior is similar to what we've seen with the 64-bit version of Windows 7. There is a different control that works with PowerChurch. Contact support via email and we'll send you a link to a download. I've been in contact with MagTek to determine how to properly distribute the control.
