A Few More IT Maxims

It's not a problem until it happens twice.

If you can't do it from a command line interface, It probably isn't worth doing. (original). The corollary: If it doesn't ship with a CLI don't buy it.

The Friday Afternoon Rule - "Don't touch ANYTHING."

Networks always go down on a Friday.

You are not a true IT professional unless one of your rooms is filled with old computer parts that you know you will need someday but never use.

Patch panel cable guides are never big enough, and your fingers are going to hurt after tracing that bad patch.

You are not a true IT professional until you have installed Windows 1.0 on a 10mhz XT box.

We have a name for IT professionals who have not experienced a catastrophic loss of data.................................................inexperienced.

The longer it takes to make a precautionary backup the less likely you are to need it, but only if you actually take the time to make it.

The longer it takes a system to reboot, the more likely the problem you're working on will require a reboot after each step.

It takes a clueless user to find a sys admin's most petty mistakes.

Better to buy a Macintosh and be thought a fool, than a Windows machine and remove all doubt.

Fast, cheap, correct. Pick two, then hope you get at least one.

Anything named ____Works, doesn't.

You can always tell the difference between real Systems Administrators and wanna-be’s. When a system goes down, real SA's are seen running to the Data Center while everyone else is seen leaving!

The only open cat 5 drop for the new employee is blocked by a bank of file cabinets.

Wow Jeff ... you've been around .. I can attest to most (if not all) of those.

There is another:

If you deliver to the end user exactly what they said they wanted, they'll deny its what they said, and they expected something completely different.
