Hi guys and gals ..
I'm getting ready for VBS this year, and testing the Dymo label printer which we're going to use at check in this time. So, I'm testing the system on my test box (WinXP), and have made sure that the latest MR is installed on the Server and the Kiosk; at least I'm not getting a version error.
Anyway, the VBS committee would like to have customized nametags for the kids, which includes the our VBS logo. I was able to take a copy of the default nametag label, customize it as I wanted, then saved it. Problem is, the new version 8 of the Dymo Label software does not default to a .LWL file extension, so I had to add it myself.
Ok, no big deal. Went into the kiosk setup, moved my mouse to the Printer area, clicked on the NEW button and entered a new label set name of VBS_Label. OK, the server created a new set of .lwl files with the VBS_Label prefix under the PCServer11\dymolabels directory.. Opened the VBS_Label.lwl file in the Dymo software, looked like the default label.
Exited the label software, went to the Kiosk setup to select the new Label Set. Not in the list !! Ok, maybe a restart of the Kiosk will do the trick. No dice. Shut down and restarted the server ... still no list of label sets.
OK ... I've done the usual, time to ask for assistance.
Cheers!!

Re: Kiosk only lists "Default" label set.
UPDATE: further testing shows that the Kiosk does not like the UNDERSCORE ( _ ) in the label name.
Now I get an error:
The requested label could not be found.
http://localhost:8727/dymolabels/vbs.lwl
Does the new Dymo label 8 software change the format of the file ?? I tried installing v7, but it doesn't recognize the Labelwriter 450 drivers, so it tells me there's no printer attached.

Re: Kiosk only lists "Default" label set.
The SET of labels are named with an Underscore in them.
The Default set has these files:
Default.lwl
Default_baglarge.lwl
Default_bagsmall.lwl
Default_notes.lwl
Default_parentlabel.lwl
Creating a new label set with an underscore in the name doesn't appear to be working.
Yes, the new Version 8.x does save the label as a new format. It will be named Default.label. As long as the file is there, the label format is used by default. The lwl will exist.
One of the maintenance releases started to cache the label/lwl files on the Kiosk workstation for each time the executable is running. This will require the Kiosk to be restarted if you change a label after you have printed that label.
The Default set has these files:
Default.lwl
Default_baglarge.lwl
Default_bagsmall.lwl
Default_notes.lwl
Default_parentlabel.lwl

OK ... the .label file extension will be OK, so if I customize the .lwl with the new Dymo v8.3 software, and save it as a .label file, Kiosk should not have an issue with it, and ignore the .lwl file if a vbs.lwl and a vbs.label file exist.
Got it ... now to test
Thanks for the reply, I told the VBS committee yesterday, it would be ready to test tonight, and I had thought I got everything else running OK. I know, deadlines

Modifications worked great, the Dymo Label software is not bad to work with.
Are there any specific 'labels' that can be used when customizing the label.

There is nothing stopping you from using any Dymo label after you customize the settings. You are limited to the information given. There are requirements when working with the labels. The fields have unique names which are used to locate and update the information on the label at print.NeilZ wrote:Are there any specific 'labels' that can be used when customizing the label.
I don't recall how images work when you use them in the software. Is the image required, or does it become part of the label? If they are required, find a common location such as C:\PowerChurch\Picture.jpg to attach it, and be sure to manually place this on all Kiosk stations using the printer. Using a network location will increase the time it takes to render and print the label.

The image becomes part of the label design, for the image I used it increased the size of the label to around 600k.Tracy wrote:There is nothing stopping you from using any Dymo label after you customize the settings. I should have been more specific about what I was asking about. I meant 'data item labels' such as firstname, lastname, child and so on. What is available to customize the data on the label.
And if its in the server PDF, I apologize for not looking there first.

Re: Kiosk only lists "Default" label set.
What is on the specific type label in the default set, is what is available.
Meaning: What you see on default.lwl is what is available for the name tag. What you see on default_smallbag.lwl is what is available for the small bag label.
The small bag label is used in the twin turbo printer as the right label. Otherwise, all labels should be designed with the same label size. The printer and control do not have a way to report back to the program which label is loaded.

Re: Kiosk only lists "Default" label set.
What the the field names needed to customize the label templates? I, for whatever reason, cannot open the default files with the Dymo software (I get an error saying "Invalid label file format"). Any thoughts?

You really cannot change the labels without the Dymo software. Which version are you using, as it should recognize the .LWL file extension.dustinbrownman wrote:What the the field names needed to customize the label templates?
