I know i would usually DB checking and CR the expense accnt but I'm not sure how to do it in this case.
We received a hiring credit for small businesses - CRA says to either record it by reducing my EI expense or include the amount as income. Last year the amount was small so i just entered under misc. income.
i dont know how to credit the Employment Insurance expense account because I set up three so we'd be able to track actual cost of each employee and the credit isnt a % of money paid -its just cuz of our size
01 5157-006 ~employers portion of EI for employee #1
01 5067-006 ~employers portion of EI for employee #2
01 5077-006 ~employers portion of EI for employee #3
what do you recommend?
I have the same question for entering a GST refund... I can't CR the actual expense account because its a little bit from every expense accnt. ... and GST refund is not income either
I do have a asset account 01 1275 GST Receivable ( - i think its for tracking what i can apply for - but I haven't used it - i just enter 0 tax paid and track it on excel - most of my checks are reimbursements that include several receipts so I don't know how to use it)
how to apply an EI credit from CRA

I am not familiar with either of the credits you are describing. However, based on your description of the situation I would recommend that you set up a separate Employment Insurance expense account specifically for the credit. This way the credit isn't co-mingled with the actual costs. If you assign sub-account 006 to the new account you can see the balances in all 4 accounts at once by running the Sub-Account report.
I would recommend doing something similar for the GST credits.

Re: how to apply an EI credit from CRA
so i could create something like
01 5300 006 Employment Insurance Expense Rebate
then CR 01 1110 000
DB 01 5300 0006 to deposit the rebate check?
the GST refund is one of our sales taxes... non profits can claim back 50% of all gst paid
so if i do the same thing as above will the money be in a "fund" or just included in checking account ?

Re: how to apply an EI credit from CRA
I don't know if I quite understand how the rebate works. Does the church keep all of the rebate, or does it go back to each employee?
I will assume that the church keeps the entire rebate.
Here's a suggestion:
Create a GROUP account for your three employees and one rebate expense account, and detail accounts for the employees and the rebate:
01-5306-000 EI GROUP, level 4 GROUP
01-5306-010 Employee #1, level 6, detail
01-5306-020 Employee #2, level 6, detail
01-5306-030 Employee #3, level 6, detail
01-5306-200 Rebate, level 6, detail
When you run your report, the rebate will be subtracted from the group total, if you deposit the rebate check like this:
DB 01-1110-000 checking $100
CR 01-5306-200 rebate $100
