Out of Order Reconciliation
I have a client that has performed a bank rec out of order. March bank rec was performed but January and February was not. Can the March bank rec be undone??? The beginning balance is now thrown way off and the only remedy I can think of is to make an adjusting entry for the difference in the beginning cash balance. I hope I made sense in my explanation. I hope someone can give me something a suggestion other than an entry.

I'm trying to figure out how (or if) the reconciliation zeroed out ??gdeans516 wrote:I have a client that has performed a bank rec out of order. Try this:
1. Do a backup of the Accounting Files, using the Powerchurch backup utility, the selection page will allow you to only backup the accounting files.
2. Do a reconcile using the March end balance and date. All the checks from Jan & Feb should be available to clear. Using the Janaury and February statements, clear those checks and deposits.
I suspect that at the end, the system will balance.
I would do that rather than try to add an entry if Jan & Feb have not been cleared against those month's statements.
However, if all the checks & deposits have been cleared, and the next reconciliation is still off, you may not have much of a choice.
How far is the reconciliation off ?? Have you reconciled April & May yet ??

Thank you for the suggestions. But to answer your question, the reconciliation was not zeroed out and was closed out with a difference. Powerchurch appeared to adjust the beginning balance but I can not seem to find the entry that was made to make that change.

Again, have you tried reconciling the other months first?gdeans516 wrote:Thank you for the suggestions. As for Powerchurch adjusting the beginning balance, are you talking the Checking Account, or the Closing Equity Account? One is not touched by Powerchurch at all, the other is adjusted when transactions are posted to the accounts that close to it.
If all else fails, I'd give the support line a call.

Re: Out of Order Reconciliation
Was there a month prior to January where the reconciliation was in balance? To find out, run the bank reconciliation report in Fund Accounting and review the reports starting with December and then going back until you find a report where the difference was $0.00. Once you find this report you'll need to "unclear" all the deposits and checks that have been cleared from that month until now to get the recon back into balance as of that month. You'll then need to proceed with doing the recons from that month until now in chronological order.
Just a note for others that read this post that you should never click the complete button on the bank reconciliation until the difference is $0.00. The system will give you a warning if you try to do so. But if you ignore the warning and click Complete it may require quite a bit of careful analysis to get the reconciliation back into balance.
