Restore PCP8 Backup to PCP9

Post by bweatherswi »

I am the new treasurer of my church.

I'm trying to restore data from several years ago that was backed up using PCP8. I get the error message:

The backup contains files from version 8 and cannot be restored to this version of PowerChurch Plus.

How can I retrieve this data?

Thanks!

The data will not restore to a copy of anything but version 8. There were database changes in both 8.5 and 9.0 that made this necessary. Your best bet, and what we do here, is keep a copy of 8.0 and 8.5 available where you can restore older data as necessary.

These different versions can coexist on the same machine without any problem, you just need to install to separate directories on the system.

If you need additional info, ask away.

Thanks, NeilZ!

As Charlie Brown would say, "Aarrrgh".

I'm surpised that PCP9 is not backward compatible. And that it does not have a "Convert" utility.

Thanks for your reply, though.

Actually, not many specialized database programs are backwards compatable, for the reasons I mentioned above, primarily the database table changes.

The reason there is no 'convert' module is that you would have to be able to include the convert facility into the backup/restore module, and in reality, all that does right now is do a ZIP of the specific files in the data directory, as well as other files located in the main PC+ directory.

It would increase the complexity of the operation, for something that would not be used all that often. Its a tradeoff between time and money, the time to create that module, and the extra money we would have to pay for that infrequently used option.

This is why we keep the various versions accessable. Insures that we always have access when needed at any time, and without worrying about overwriting current data.
