Beginning and ending balance carried forward

Post by farmer11 »

I need to know why the ending balance did not carry forward into the next month. If I look on the check register it is correct. When I run the report that is called balance sheet for June it is off by the amount of the ending balance in April to May $798.76. All the May reports come out correct, but June is short.
Thanks :?:

Run the Journal Report for May, June, and July and look at the transaction date for each transaction that posted to the checking account. This difference is likely due because there are one or more deposits or checks where the transaction date and posting month are not in sync i.e. transaction date is 6/1/07 but posting month is May 2007.

I checked the journal report for April,May,and June everything in posted with the right date and month. Is there a way to just change the beginning balance for the month of June? That would be an easy fix even if I don't know why the ending balance for the month of May did not carry forward.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

There is not a way to just adjust a beginning balance, without posting an adjusting entry against the account.

I would suggest running an Account Activity report for that particular account, for the month of May. This will show you a beginning balance, a list of transactions (with debits or credits) then an ending balance. This report should show you exactly why the balance is not carrying forward to June.

The account activity report shows the correct balance at the end of the month of May. $1927.89. This is what does not show up in June beginning balance. What I get is the is the beginning balance for the month of May. It is just like all the entries for May are not be considered when the beginning balance is being picked up for the month of June.

So if I understand correctly, the ending "Current Balance" shown for the checking account on the Account Activity report for May is not the same as the "Beginning Balance" for the month of June?

Yes that is the problem. The month of June is the beginning of our year at the church.

Thanks

The Account Activity showing a different balance than the Balance Sheet would point to what an earlier poster suggested, a transaction date being outside the accounting month the transaction was posted to. The balance sheet only takes into consideration things posted in a particular month. It does not care what date is on the transaction. The account activity allows you to narrow the date range as well as the accounting month. The check register looks only at the date, not the month.

Another thing to look at, since June is the first month of a new accounting year, if you look at an account activity or some other reports for May, there will be an extra check-box option to "Include year end transactions". Be sure to check that. Hopefully one of these things will shed some light on the problem.
