STARTTLS error message

Attempted to send group email from profile tab
recieved following error message:
"5.7.0 must issue a STARTTLS command first e16sm3162158 qbe"
and
"5.7.0 Too many unauthenticated commands...(same addr as above)"

I am pretty certain my email preferences are set up correctly; i am able to email individually.

PLEASE ADVISE
