Virus?

Post by Frank Henderson »

Today I got an email message from"PCP" that was entitled something like Price_Update.zip. Turned out to contain two viruses. Have you had any other mentions of this? I couldn't believe it.

More details on virus

Post by Frank Henderson »

I just looked at the email again and it showed an attachment (the paperclip) with the subject of [pcplus]. Clicking on it brought the message from Bill [bill@churchmail.com]. I think I was faked out because the subject was what it was and the sender was who it was. I shoulda realized you wouldn't send out price info in such a fashion. Anyway, the virus is now cleaned off my computer.

There are all kinds of viruses that are very clever in their presentation. We have multiple layers of protection from viruses here, so it's highly unlikely that it would have come from us. The "bill@churchmail.com" address is not associated with anyone in our organization either.

Our favorite is when we receive mail addressed from "The PowerChurch Support Team" wanting us to open some attachment.

The only time you should receive an email from us with an attachment is if you've been on the phone with a technician, and they tell you they are emailing a file to fix a particular problem. None will just show up unexpectedly like that.

I'm glad you were able to get it cleaned off. Make sure to keep your virus scanning software up to date, and if you have an always-on connection to the internet (like DSL or cable), it's a good idea to have a firewall. The new service pack for Windows XP (due any minute now) is supposed to fix a lot of vulnerabilities, but I would still take other precautions.
