QM_UPD.UPD error in Windows Vista

The following error may occur after installing Maintenance Releases in Windows Vista:

PROGRAM: apps.startprocesses
LINE: 74
ERROR: 1705
MESSAGE: File access is denied C:\Program Files\PowerChurch\PCPLUS10\qm_upd.upd

The line number and error numbers may vary from one version of PowerChurch Plus to the next. Please note the file path that is listed in the "Message" portion begins with "C:\Program Files".

As mentioned in the Is PowerChurch Plus Compatible With Windows Vista article, this and other errors can be expected from installing PowerChurch Plus to the Program Files folder.

In this situation, the error message happens because permissions on the C:Program Files folder are user-specific in Windows Vista. With "UAC" enabled, you must click Yes to the prompt asking if you want to allow the actions of the installer to happen. This then changes the "user" who the file belongs to, to "Administrator", not your individual Windows user.

You may be logged into Windows as "Joe", but once the prompt comes up, asking for you to confirm the action, the user then changes to "Administrator". The next time you run PowerChurch Plus, logged into Windows as "Joe", you will be denied access to change or delete this file, which now belongs to "Administrator". In this case specifically, there is a temporary file called "qm_upd.upd" that PowerChurch Plus is trying to programmatically delete, but Windows is blocking access to do so, because the file does not belong to "Joe", it belongs to "Administrator".

Due to this type of issue, which will manifest itself in other areas of the program as well, it is not advised to install PowerChurch Plus to the "Program Files" directory in Windows Vista. The default install location is C:\PowerChurch\PCPLUS10\.

To resolve this issue, do the following:

  • Open Computer, then browse into the Program Files folder.
  • Find the PowerChurch folder, then right click on it and choose "Cut".
  • Browse back to the root of the C drive, then right click and choose "Paste".

This will move PowerChurch Plus and its assets into the proper location. Once this process is complete:

  • Browse into the C:\PowerChurch\PCPLUS10\ directory
  • Locate the Netsetup10.exe program and run it.

This will re-register the program with Windows in the new location and also update the shortcut on your Desktop to point to the new location.

If this computer is the network server, or host computer for PowerChurch Plus, each of the network workstations will need to be updated to reference the new location. For instructions for installing PowerChurch Plus in a network environment, visit the Mapping a Network Drive article.
